Poems on Faith, Family, G-d, and Love
by Leonard Milgraum
ISBN 978-0-935437-36-3 $16.95
As a child of immigrant parents during the Great Depression Milgraum experienced the biting hardships of poverty. As he approached adolescence, he watched in horror as Naziism cast its grim shadow upon the Jewish world. Jews were forced to confront the virtual destruction of European Jewry, which had been the center of Ashkenazic spiritual life for nearly two thousand years.
Against the backdrop of a history laden with despair, a miracle occurred. Modern Israel was founded, representing a beginning rather than an end. Milgraum rejoiced, experiencing the hope that speaks of possibility. With new dreams came a fresh wave of poetry.
Amidst the pursuit of various occupations throughout his life, including trial attorney, farmer, and land developer, Milgraum never abandoned his true vocation-his poetry. Nowhere is his passion for his craft better exemplified than in I Am a Jew, which is marked by the loves that have characterized his life: love of G-d, love of family, and love of his art.
The book also explores the universal themes of family, humanity, and nature. Milgraum's finely tuned poems suggest that fulfillment in life stems not from worldliness, but from the pursuit of the blessings that lay closest to home.
His work calls out with the voices of the Prophets, telling us to abandon our vain quest for consumption and material possession in favor of the paradise that "lies languishing within." Milgraum implores that rather than exiling ourselves from Eden, we should acknowledge the paradise that lies just within our reach, if only we would unlock the gates.
